I am trying to organise a book launch and I need to get a sense of how many people would attend. Would any of my London (or London adjacent) moots be interested in coming? It would be on release day on Oct 24!

TFW you're just chilling, vibing, hanging out, with not a care in the world, after handing the keys of the country to the far right

Pre-order my book about Bergson to find out about his family ties to Proust, his secret meeting with President Wilson during WWI, why he caused the first ever traffic jam on Broadway, and the experiments he and Pierre Curie conducted on an Italian medium called Eusapia Palladino Links in thread

When you're in France you can put a little bit of chocolate in some bread and it's the most delicious thing you've ever tasted in your life, as a treat

2002: kinda creepy that everything we put on the internet is there forever 2024: i wish i could read anything I wrote before 2015 3024: we call the period from 1900-2100 “the dark ages” as paper had acid in it and later they trusted their writing to something called a cloud. Very little is known.

I feel like the beauty of Einstein's response is that he makes it clear he is not going to answer the question but somehow makes it Brunschvicg's fault

Incidentally, this was also the meeting during which the infamous debate between Einstein and Bergson took place. See Jimena Canales' book on the topic and the chapter about this episode in my forthcoming book which you can preorder here www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/emily...

10/10 no notes!!!! Einstein absolutely killed this. There's no possible comeback on Brunschvig's part, Einstein fully dodged the question in the most elegant, casual, and blasé way possible! You love to see it

This is where Einstein was TRULY a genius. He tactfully responded that “each philosopher has their own Kant,” adding, “I cannot answer what you have just said, because the few indications you have given are insufficient for me to know how you interpret Kant.”

The meeting started with a presentation of Einstein's theories by physicist Paul Langevin after which the floor was opened to questions. Léon Brunschvig launched into a lengthy question about the links between relativity and Kant’s conception of science. Admire Brunschvig's béret

When he came to Paris in 1922, Einstein, by then a Nobel laureate, was snubbed by the French physics society because of post WWI anti-German sentiments. He therefore found himself speaking before a crowd of philosophers and a few physicists at the French philosophical society.

One of my favourite little details I found researching my book is an exchange between Einstein and French philosopher Léon Brunschvig in 1922 which provides an absolute masterclass in how to avoid a question you don't know how to/don't want to answer

I mainly work with academics. Some of them hire me to proofread their work (from articles to PhD dissertations). Others hire me because English (or French) isn't their first language and they need more in-depth editing.
