2023 was the hottest year on record. Around the world, it was marked by record wildfires, hot-tub temperature ocean waters, torrential downpours, and non-stop heatwaves. The US had one billion+ dollar weather extreme every 1.8 weeks.

As we accept our shared human role in the destruction of nature and in the chaos of climate change, something counterintuitive is happening. I have noticed in myself a kind of fatalism along with a deepening sense of joy in the everyday gifts of life and beauty. Is this hedonism?

We can see how dire things are for our home planet. We can understand our role in it. We can feel bad that the innocent suffer the most. We can suffer too, on occasion. Our hearts are breaking. But we cannot stop fighting among ourselves long enough to act.
