I do Miami things: study hurricanes🌀, grow orchids 🌸, and complain about the humidity 🥵. Husband and dog dad. 🏳️‍🌈

Sorry, juggling too many things today... it was no longer a Category 5 as of 2pm Eastern, so a total of 12 hours.

#Beryl was first upgraded to a Category 5 hurricane on Monday night, and as of Tuesday afternoon, Beryl is still a Category 5 hurricane, clinging to that very high bar for 15 hours and counting as of this writing.

#Beryl moved out of Barbados' radar range on Monday afternoon, and its inner core is at the far reaches of radars in Puerto Rico and Curacao... but those are updating at bmcnoldy.earth.miami.edu/tropics/radar/. Unfortunately, the radar in Jamaica is down.

If #Beryl magically dissipated today, the tropical Atlantic ACE would catch up to climatology if no other activity occurred until ~ August 21.

There has been just one hurricane formation east of the Caribbean in June, and that was during the all-time record-breaking hurricane season of 1933. So to say this is extremely rare (and troubling) is an understatement. #Beryl #94L

The Democratic Party’s reaction to their candidate having a bad debate substantially outpaces the Republican Party’s reaction to their candidate being convicted of multiple felonies, held liable for rape, and owing judgments in the hundreds of millions for defamation and fraud.

And I yank and throw away so many every week. If you don't want your yard to be a rainforest in Miami, it takes a LOT of weekly maintenance, pruning, removal, etc. But out in the wild, the more the merrier!

Not just formation, but existence. So if some hurricane was around for 8 days in 1995, it would make a contribution to the climatological presence of an active hurricane on each of those days (fractional days are accounted for too).

I finally got around to updating this, using the final best track data from 2023. This is the average seasonal cycle of Atlantic tropical cyclone activity over the past 50 years (tropical storms in blue, hurricanes in orange, major hurricanes in green). #HurricaneSeason

Another great reminder that impacts from tropical cyclones extend FAR from the track forecast cone (cone of uncertainty). This is the 10th year that the Hurricane Threats and Impacts (HTI) graphics have been operational and they're such a great impact communication tool. #Alberto

The United States was built by genocide of the native Americans and by slavery of Africans. It's not a history to be proud of. But ending slavery was obviously a positive step, and we celebrate the day it became official, 159 years ago today.

The name #Alberto was first used in 1982, and every six years since, so this is the name's 8th appearance. Here are the tracks of the previous 7 Albertos. [2/2]

Tropical Storm #Alberto has formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, making it the latest first named storm since 2014. Over the past 50 years, the median date is June 15, with a trend toward earlier dates (for several reasons). [1/2]

No, the early part of the season is typically "junky", regardless of what the heart of the season ends up looking like.

I'm not really a climate modeler to be able to crank up the SSTs in a region and see "what if". But this is certainly exceptional, and I think everyone would agree it's uncharted territory.

On June 9, 2023, the sea surface temperature averaged over the North Atlantic was 3.6 standard deviations above the mean (based on the 1991-2020 climatology). On June 9, 2024, it's 4.1 standard deviations above the mean. A 1991-2020 climatology already looks irrelevant and outdated. 🤯

I have yet to hear of anyone having an easy/seamless experience time on Mastodon. I never tried it, partly because of the "challenging" experiences I heard about! This locks it in.

The large-scale environment during the heart of #HurricaneSeason (Aug-Sep-Oct) still looks ominous in the June update of the NMME (multi-model ensemble). We see -SST anomalies in the ENSO regions, hefty +SST anomalies in the tropical Atlantic, and deep-tropics +rainfall anomaly.

Since we won't see a tropical or subtropical storm form in the Atlantic today, 2024 will have the latest first named storm in a decade. In 2014, TS Arthur formed on July 1. When will Alberto form this year? #HurricaneSeason

My annual average rainfall is 68.20 inches, and 60% of that falls during the rainy season (May15-Oct15) and 40% during the dry season. 6 of the top 10 highest daily totals occurred during the dry season. [2/2]

12 years ago today, I began daily rainfall observations for #CoCoRaHS (FL-MD-33) at home. In those 12 years, the gauge has collected 67.8 feet of rain. It's been fun to create stats on means, records, average return periods, etc. #CitizenScience [1/2]

It's June 1, the first day of Atlantic #HurricaneSeason, and the ocean heat content averaged in the Main Development Region is as high as it normally would be on August 17. And incredibly, it's even higher than what 2023 was on this date.

Trump promoted a video of one of his supporters attacking "blowjob liberals" and raging that if Trump is elected, he will "get rid" of liberals, who will be "gone." The video also attacked @JoeNBC as a "scumbag."

How is this not bigger news? 1/
