A strong, bite-sized novel, or a narrative in poetic struck-matches.
It reminds me of Janet Frame’s comment, that she thought of all her novels as experiments. Maybe genre-categories will turn to ash, too, in the hands of this short but punchy publication. #pukapuka #aotearoa

Ten writers by whom I’ve read more than five books: Julian Barnes Ali Smith Ian McEwan John Steinbeck David Mitchell Zadie Smith Don DeLillo Alan Hollinghurst Cormac McCarthy Paul Auster Wow, almost didn’t get there. Seems like I often stop at four. A lot of these are fuelled by my early twenties.

Also I love flirting with all the books I could potentially read next. It’s like that moment at the ballot box when you suddenly become aware of your choices and tempt yourself to frivolously undo the decision you’ve spent weeks making.

Whenever I finish reading a novel I allow a gap of time before I start the next as a mark of respect, otherwise I feel guilty for just how enthusiastically and greedily I jump headfirst into a brand new one. It’s a way of letting a book resolve in my head and calmly lay itself to rest.
