I’m not the one with epilepsy in my family, but I’ve had similar exchanges about Autistic shutdowns. Why did I completely lose speech while my pulse ox reading plummeted in a medical setting? When I can talk again, I’ll explain autism. Again.

Thank you for pointing out the ick here. My son is mostly non speaking, so we can’t have standard conversations abt all this implies, but some people have used this word 2 describe him & I get what u mean. Why can’t they just say he’s stylish or has sophisticated taste w/o the presumptions?

And Bears. It’s how bears work too. I know this only bc of the Man or Bear thing, and I’ve been going out of my way to socialize more with bears. Teatime with actual bears is almost as much fun as playtime tea parties I had with teddy bears when I was a tiny human.

I’m troubled by the people starting sentences with “It’s not so complicated…” It is. It’s SO complicated. I’m Jewish, but not an expert on the Middle East. Yet at every family gathering these topics came up: Zionism, Israel, individual and group attitudes toward Jews, a Palestinian state.

This is absolutely right. I had a formal autism diagnosis myself, and thought ABA was OK for my mostly non-speaking son. After listen to autistics younger than myself who actually went through ABA, I no longer think it is OK. Self-Advocacy>Compliance #TalkToABASurvivors

I broke up with diet culture the minute I finished reading your first book. I’ve been pushing back w/ many people, especially my own doctors, ever since. When I saw my gynecologist yesterday, and she started the diet talk, I held up my hand and told her I’d answer with my own anti-diet talk.

I’m a non-attorney special ed advocate. I learned in my training at a wrightslaw.com workshop that if it’s not in writing, it didn’t happen. That strikes me as almost Talmudic. Write it in an email, on post-its, on scrolls, parchment, or chisel it into stone tablets. A traceable trail makes it real.

For those who need to hear this: mentally ill folks are fully capable of doing brave, heroic, caring, loving acts. Having a psychiatric disability doesn’t necessarily prevent you from being in solidarity with other human beings. Also, it’s fucked up to assume you know someone’s mental state.

The problem 4 the #profoundautism parents has, I think, less to do w/ their autistic kids & more to do the parents’ own rigid, unimaginative expectations. My mostly non-speaking son lights up every room he enters, is kind & attracts kind people. I consider him a successful human.

The entitlement of the #profoundautism parents is breathtaking. Assuming the “good life” they expected didn’t include a significantly disabled child, I suspect these parents would tantrum over ivy league schools that didn’t accept their kids. (1/2)
