📢NEW from me: Carbon dioxide removal is "stuck between a rock and a hard place": on the one hand, there are concerns that companies could use it to delay cutting their emissions. On the other, every pathway to zero carbon requires CDR. So what should we do? @oxfordsmithschool.bsky.social

"Benjamin Franta said enforcement has never been international courts’ forte. “It’s a well-known challenge [with] international courts: Because they don’t have independent police power, they must persuade member states to comply with their orders.”

“It's critically important that we keep existing rich ecosystems like rainforests intact, because they store far more carbon than we ever could if we just started planting trees everywhere.” 2/2

Planting trees is not the same as preserving the complex ecosystems that are fully grown & have been absorbing carbon from the atmosphere for years. In the latest
BBC Panorama documentary, Kaya Axelsson highlighted the importance of preserving these ecosystems. 1/2

"But if you're using that credit generated to offset your own emissions, to say, I'm going to pay someone else to remove or reduce, [while I continue emitting], then that's a very different thing."

"What we are doing with credits is we're saying I want to help someone in another part of the world reduce or remove carbon. In principle, that's a very good thing. " 3/4

There are many other good reasons to invest in high quality credits of many kinds other than to offset towards an organisation’s own operational net zero target. Kaya Axelsson was on Panorama and highlighted this difference: 2/4

There is a very limited but critical role for the use of high-quality credits to balance the hardest to abate residual emissions to meet #netzero targets. & these credits have to meet a very high bar to sustain net zero. Last night, Kaya clarified on BBC:

Moving towards a #netzero future, the role of governments & regulators becomes increasingly crucial. With companies voluntarily pledging net-zero targets, there’s an ‘implementation gap’ where the limits of voluntary action become clear.
