Me, last night: I am surprisingly okay with this potential negative development that does not fit this person’s behaviour at all and other explanations that do are right there anyway. My body, now: Okay, but you really don’t NEED that much oxygen, right? I wish to scream.

Stop saying cosy sff is “vibes” challenge rating: impossible.

And NEEDLESSLY. Just hire a person who actually understands the material and, you know, how people arrive at the answers they do and how to work the information into their learning style. If nothing else it’s infinitely cheaper than trying to get a bit of code to do something it CANNOT do.

The Dragon of Ynys, maybe? That’s more in line with Party of Fools tone-wise and the Zdarsky run of Jughead is there… oh! And Werecockroach! Werecockroach is a DELIGHT! I think that’s all my tired brain has got, though, so I hope it has something that clicks with you. 💕

I suppose, in theory, Carrie Pilby is supposed to be humourous? But the, ah, rep is a throwaway line and I don’t think the book was ever intended as rep, so… There’s aspec romcoms like Let’s Talk About Love, but they lean rom more than com, I find? [thinks]

I mean, I 100% am one of those people who doesn’t get on with most sexual humour. But yeah it’s why I wanted to give you a rough idea what to expect of the humour in them. I think, from what I’ve read of your book, you might get on with them if the sff doesn’t put you off?

I hope if we get another season or show, they’ll do a really nice bookshop/library table shot with a wider selection than we got this season, but Isaac’s arc that season was lovely. Neatly avoided most of my hesitations, so thatv was really nices

Party of Fools is more generic comedic fantasy, but with aspec (and autistic and trans) leads. The Hereafter Bytes is explicitly aspec comedic scifi, so that’s more in line with the type of comedy I think you were asking about because it deliberately plays with tropes in a comedic way.

Best I can think of is Party of Fools by Cedar McCloud or The Hereafter Bytes by Vincent Scott. The humour in the latter didn’t work for me personally, but it’s definitely worth a look. I’m… picky about comedy, so it’s more incidental to what I pick up than something I know a lot about, I’m afraid 😅

Oh no doubt that’s a factor, though I hope that’s slowly changing. (Arguably the apparent general trend in contemp YA to have ace/allo romances suggests we have a ways to go. :/ )

‘s Because it’s unpredictable. No one expected Barbenheimer, but they sure are trying to create another instance. It’s a perfect storm of circumstances. I HOPE we’ll get that for aspec rep and I hope people won’t ignore what came before if we do, but I’d not dare predict whether we’ll get it. 😅

I think Oseman’s work is both visible and generally accessible enough to do a lot of good, so… yes. I think, at minimum, her work is helping to lay the groundwork for the potential of a book being just the right one published at just the right time to make a bigger wave than any we’ve had so far.

I think it depends on what you call spotlighted and mainstream, really. Aspec rep in fiction all-around has grown substantially in numbers in the past ten years. It’s just people don’t *care* unless the books are shoved in their faces and then that’s the only one they care about.

I’d much rather look at what it’s trying to do and how it does it than assess whether it’s good or bad. (Exceptions exist, House and Gay For You But We’ll Call It Demisexuality.)

Then there’s the “bad” rep that is ownvoices BECAUSE that is an accurate and honest exploration of their experiences. It’s just those experiences met “eeeeewwww stereotypes” for people and we should get to explore those too.

It’s… complicated. Generally the more intersection between identities or the more nuance you want the harder it is to find AND the harder it is to gauge what makes good rep because it gets caught on having to be everything to everyone or it’s “bad”, and the genuinely bad rep prob won’t touch those.

And that’s HARD, tbh, because they’re often intertwined, especially in kid’s media.

I’d also argue that discussions of children’s media would benefit a lot from acknowledging the differences between aromanticism and asexuality because A LOT of that conflation seems to start here, where kids learn what various relationships can look like.

No, but I don’t remember much at all and I was engaging with non-kid media quite young, so I’m not the best to ask personal experiences of. 😅 Will agree, since I still do engage with children’s media, that compulsive sexuality is often baked into the assumptions even if it’s not the focus.

I think that arc basically only exists on YouTube now. Maybe NZ dvds if the show was ever collected or people’s recordings in private collections. Divorced’s aspec arc has the added difficulty of being a Dutch show. And OF COURSE their arcs center ace/allo relationships prominently.

Some of them are also discovery and permanence. As evidenced by people not even having heard of Shortland Street despite it being the first show to have an explicit DELIBERATE aspec subplot for a main character. But y’know. NZ soap opera that iirc predates That House Episode. So. 🤷‍♀️

I’m currently very bored at work. Ask me questions about aspec rep or cosy sff so I have something to keep my brain awake I’d do a thread on aspec rep in tv/movies but my thoughts on those are still too incoherent. Mostly it’s at implicit vs explicit and how we’re conditioned to dismiss the former.

The live action adaptation even gives, like, 90% of the expected love interest arcs that SHOULD be Mamoru’s to Ami. (TV Tropes will tell you PGSM Ami is word of god canonically in love with Usagi, so that makes sense, but does not source this.)

They do nooooooot. Late season 1 gets a bit invested in what can arguably be called “they’re all straight, we swear, look how superstraight they are”, but [gestures at the sequel arcs] It doesn’t actually stick.

I am honestly tempted to go back because it’s marginally closer to the ground and thus I can convince my brain this is cooler, but it’d just worry people more for very little gain.

I, being sensitive to heat, have accordingly spent half the day on my floor because it took me that long to work up the energy to take five more steps to somewhere less potentially worrying to others. There was also a door. Insurmountable.

I would say I’m fine, but it’s more “I’m at a manageable point and will be okay later”? Anyway, this morning we were at 90%+ humidity and there is still nowhere for the heat to go, so even though it’s not superhot degrees-wise, it’s still at “if you are sensitive to heat, take extra care”.
