Assembly: Writing the Self from Fragments, July 26th-29th
I'm co-leading a lovely weekend writing retreat in the Sussex countryside in late July with the wonderful @mariannebrooker.bsky.social.
We'll be creating narratives from the fragments of our lives.

Thanks Claire, I'm excited to share it with you. I'd love to somehow share it with UCC/in Ireland, maybe a talk or something next year.

I have a pair of Vasque walking boots that, while pricey at the time, have seen me through five years and hundreds of miles. They are cute and super comfy.

Very much enjoyed seeing my normally quiet town turn a bit anarchic for bonfire night.

A sick child meant an unexpected day off today from day job for caring + other kinds of labour. But it also gave me a little time for thinking, quietly, and watching the birds during naptime.

Excellent gothic festivities at Battle Abbey this morning, we met 'The Professor' in the depths of the ruins, he taught us how to make shadow puppets, babbled about bringing the dead back to life, and never broke character even with my 2yo.

Ah that's lovely. How was it? I signed up for the Sinéad Gleeson workshop but couldn't make it due to a deadline.

Completed my monograph on women's travel and networked writing in the 18C last night, after tinkering with the subject in one form or another for just over a decade (!!) Excited to see it out in the world in 2024.

First session last night of @londonlitlab.bsky.social 8 month workshop. Forgot how lovely workshop environment can be, closely reading and discussing work in progress. Lots of rich ideas to carry forward on my memoir project about my grandparents, the Holocaust, intergenerational trauma.

Your Instagram paintings have been a nice reminder to me to do and look for beautiful things, and also not to feel like I must only do one type of beautiful thing.

Welcome @mariannebrooker.bsky.social!
Everyone interested in books, nonfiction, care, the environment should follow her prior to the launch of her book with Fitzcarraldo next year, and also just because she is lovely.

Very much wish I had the money to buy this farmhouse near Lewes, once lived in by Angelica Garnett (daughter of Vanessa Bell, niece of Virginia Woolf), still decorated with Bloomsbury motifs.

There is not much that is better than reading the writing of beloved friends while it's still in draft, knowing it will grow and go out in the world and do powerful work.

Been unwell in body this wk, not up for much but reading/listening to nice things: Sinéad Gleeson's Constellations; BBC sounds adapt. of Rhiannon L Cosslett's Year of the Cat; finishing 3rd in series Judith Kerr's autobiographical YA novels. Sribbling few lines in between. Healing my head at least.

It helps having a research post! I can sharpen all my pencils and enjoy the leaves without the panic of teaching prep. But this is my last year in the post, so making the most of it. Hope you find quiet moments to keep writing.

I wrote 1,000 words today as well and read about 40 pages, much better than any day recently. Hoping I'll be able to use at least a bit of what I wrote... The change to autumn always brings me a little more calm and focus.
