I generally hate them too, but if you can get them still hot and (very slightly) oily out of the fryer... they can be pretty good!

We love us some Porto's (Cuban bakery/cafe chain in LA) and their sandwiches come with plantain chips as a side; the first couple of times we went there, the chips were already cool and frankly nasty. Then one time they came out hot and I suddenly saw the light.
