Apparently it's explained by a deleted scene in which they explain that our technology is mostly based on the spaceship they found in Rosewell in the 1960's which is why it's compatible.

Gonna rewatch that today. When it came out, I was working in a place w/Macs, Windows, and Suns. We got the Windows and Unix boxes talking easily; the Macs were a nightmare. When we all went to see it, my comment when we left was "Well, we finally found an OS that will connect to a Mac!"

It was not only Mac compatible, everyone who configured a 9600 baud modem back in the days to talk to that hillybilly ISP with the fancy dialin router and hacking AT codes like crazy will understand the marvel of engineering this dude must have been able to pull off when dialing in to the alien ship
