synthetic meat (grown from cultures) synthetic cotton (vertical farms or bioengineering) thereβs no actual problem with wood scarcity, or at least the problem is not as severe as the externalities from petrochemicals (which are required for plastics). also furniture is reusable

People said Greenpeace was nuts in 2009 to predict 921GW of installed solar by 2030. Last year there was 1,419GW. Cost dropped 95% from 2008-20 and itβs dropping faster. There will be vast amounts of cheap clean energy in the future; we just need to use it.

thereβs something deeply funny about the fact that a platform led by cutting edge technologists, that exists due to their innovation and effort, managed to gather a huge cohort of people who use the decentralized protocol to argue that innovation and technology is bad

for better or worse, itβs not possible to provide technical barriers against this, without throwing out the concept of general purpose computation you can always just run the model on your own computer

implementing global controls on what energy usage is allowed, decided by a central committee, is actually much, much harder and has far more fraught outcomes then simply buying the cheap solar panels and tiling them in the desert

yeah and quick question. how much of the surface area of the earth, using current PV efficiency, would be required to be covered with solar in order to meet two times the current global energy demand?

wasted energy is when someone uses energy for something i personally do not like. when the sun hurtles 1e20 times the total energy requirements of earth into the literal void, thatβs not waste

the point is to point out the comically, unimaginably, large (zero-carbon) energy output from just the sun in our local system, and how little of that we are actually using. sorry that this makes you mad

framing the issue as zero sum and the only solution as reducing energy usage actually prevents addressing the crisis (CCL for example requires large energy input). thereβs a reason that petrochemical heirs (the Gettys, for example) fund NGOs to support this approach

the vast, vast majority of zero-carbon energy on earth is unutilized. we know how to do carbon capture and achieve a sustainable carbon cycle (CCL- carbon cycle of lime). if you want to make a dent on climate change and sustainability, go help deploy these

we do not have an energy scarcity problem. we have an engineering and deployment problem, which is rapidly being solved shaming categories of energy use is stupid and counterproductive. we donβt need to reduce energy usage, we need to build
