An entertaining finished product will impress a publisher / comic house much more than a perfectly formatted script, 100% of the time. Not only does it demonstrate your skill as a writer but your ability to see a project through!

My belief is there’s not really a correct way to write for comics, certainly not when you’re starting out. Better to just get writing and hone your craft, and try and find someone to draw your words (or draw yourself!), then self publish and get it out there!

I’d say the book is more geared to inspiring creativity than a technical ‘how-to’ but I’m sure you’d find inspiration there! You might find Alan Moore’s Writing for Comics useful, and I love John Yorke’s Into The Woods for cross media story structure. 1/2

This is really good advice if you’re struggling with a redraft. Drawing your characters help make them feel real, and the more fully realised a character is in your mind, the more you can grasp how they might speak/act/react 👇

Don’t know if UK advances are just smaller due to a smaller market, but here I’ve seen everything between £1.5k and £10k for a first time advance. Biggest advance I’ve seen someone get is £15>£20k and that’s someone more established. It’s rare.

I did some layout analysis for different comics, and then I figured they’d probably be helpful for other people too. It’s really interesting how cartoonists can use different methods to create a sense of subjectivity or wrongness or slow time.

Can I ask, when it says ‘representing a large, established publisher’ does that apply to creators with work published by those publishers or just the publishers themselves? Would love to apply but it would be for published books… so no worries if it’s not for me!
