Yeah. The US has seen a fairly substantial (for this country and in worldwide context both, I think) public health effort to discourage smoking, almost all indoor spaces ban it now... and it took decades for habitual smoking rates to drop to 10% or so. Long tail, arguably generational change.

I think a lot of antiwar people (in the US especiallly) are desperate enough for allies across the political spectrum to not draw the line between conservative "antiwar" attitudes talking about "nationbuilding" as the problem with Iraq and Afghanistan and their frequent admiration for Israel.

Another way to put it is that there's a segment of the American right-wing which recognizes that the American framing of our international political hegemony as alliances and international organizations imposes reciprocality on us and they don't like that we have obligations to allies.

The takeaway I have from this piece is that Republican "anti-interventionists" aren't opposed to militarism, they're opposed to what they see as the use of American power on behalf of people they consider to be unworthy. The one guy's personal conversion narrative is instructive there.
