so like the generic "young hero" card would be logged as something you've played and exists and other abilities would allow you to alter its traits, give it a name, make it stronger, etc. so the game creates a history through a series of on-paper database updates

You could do something narrative-ish, like cards or game currency builds a player a narrative fanfic outline, maybe other players can complicate it, and then the main player has to ad-lib it.
