This is going to piss a lot of people off, but you don't have the obligation to write. If it makes your life better, by all means, do it! But if writing fills you with dread, stress, and feelings of inadequacy, it's okay to stop. You don't owe it to anyone to write--not even to yourself <3

Yes, it's true that any act of creation can bring with it some amount of discomfort, and sometimes it's worth it to push through it. But I know so many people who spend decades HATING the shit out of writing yet kept pushing themselves to do it anyway. I was one of those people myself.

I haven't written anything for nearly two years (I usually write fanfic) because I felt like screaming into the void on AO3 (most of my stories did not get any comments). And now I'm stuck in this cycle where my ADHD won't let me focus if I do attempt to write. I guess this is it.

This is why I only write fanfiction, rather than attempting original fic. I enjoy fanfic and it brings me happiness, but trying to get published filled me with dread. So I stopped doing it. I'm happy sharing my stories with my fellow fans and that's good enough for me.

Due to a longstanding error where my mother mistakenly thought we were the same person, I spent years believing that becoming a serious writer was my calling. Letting go of that let me become the visual artist that I am now. And sometimes I write for fun.

My partner is a writer, and I often hear him giggling as he works. He's utterly perplexed by the people who talk about writing like a draining chore. If you don't enjoy it, don't do it! I grew up assuming I'd be a writer because so many protagonists of the books I read were. Turned out a quilter.
