saying this is NOT the same thing as saying that the situation is no big deal and everything will be fine - but the truth is, when things look really bad, ceding defeat before you've actually been *defeated* is a completely useless strategy.
I get called a doomer because I think the whole system is broken and fucked even if the democrats win. But saying that isn't the same as saying "I give up, let's do nothing". It's just that, while sure, vote for Biden, that _isn't_ the fight. The US system may be unsavable, but people aren't.
If we came together en masse to tell the Democratic Party this, they would still be in their soundproof rooms refreshing the Matt Yglesias substack until he illuminates the possible
A lot of people won’t even *consider* fighting back before we’re fully fucked, though. It’s not necessarily an “I give up” position, sometimes it’s a matter of NOW is it bad enough yet?? Some people need to hear the “we’re fucked” part out loud.
Declaring that something’s hopeless and you should just give up has much the same effect as dismissing it as not worth worrying about. Both encourage inaction. Both only help the worst people in the world.
