it'd have to be during the wars of religion like the Dutch & English revolutions, but would the republicans be Protestant or Catholic? hard to say but i'm leaning towards Protestant or at least Jansenist—an alliance of Huguenot-dominated southern parlements, northern politiques, & enraged peasantry

been listening to the Revolutions podcast and it got me thinking it might've been possible for the French Revolution to have happened much earlier—if not for Louis XIV's imposition of absolutism the parlements might end up deciding they could run France better without a monarch
