I grew up in Meridian MS in the 1960s (do the math or geography). I can assure you it is always about the racism. I hear every dog whistle, but these days that’s hardly a necessary skill.

You are absolutely correct. I am so happy to have voted against both, for what good that did. I’ve always lived in a red state and feel as though my presidential vote has never counted.

I lived in Houston over 40 years. There’s a lot of blue there. That’s why the Lege is systematically killing the public school system and passing legislation to “undo” elections there.

I ponder this not so much for battles but for expeditions/trips across what to my eye is uncharted territory (and would be unfamiliar to my hypothetical traveler). How the heck do they know where they are going? I get guides, rivers, etc. but still.

We had a guy in Houston we called “anything for a buck.” He hustled and had this uncanny ability to show up when we needed him. We haven’t found an Antonio in our current home. He was great!

I got my MA in history in 1977 (actually, finished in 1979) and I would NEVER hold myself out as either a historian (I like “a”) or an expert. I started following historian twitter several years ago and I’m delighted by the changes.
