My mentoring conversations continue to be “it is OK to have people whose work you like who it would disappoint you to find out they suck. But if it would shatter your entire world because you put them on a pedestal, that’s a problem for your scholarship & your mental health.”

My own life is made more complex by different kinds of acquaintance/friendship/collaborations, & the best I can say is that I trust, I have compassion, I fact check, & there are absolutely some things that put you beyond the pale (especially in terms of entrusting my students).
