So I guess my actual point is it's easy to blame the tourists when they're part of larger issues; salem survived no longer being a vital port by turning into the Halloween party town, but what does that mean for the people who live in the houses people photograph because they were in the background?

Oh yeah; it's why I have mixed feelings on it. It's important for the economy, but also some of the choices being made are making the problem worse. Also in truth the tourists can be bad but the fact that they have a giant population of "psychics" grifting off the memory of the victims is ugh

The other issue is just on a pure infrastructure level, the roads are built with x amount traffic in mind, and so on. I mean my actual beef is that salem is kind of doing stolen valor, but then again anyone with actual generation trauma about the trials moved away.

I mean, yeah I'm being a bit hyperbolic, but the last time I was there the sewage system just... broke, and businesses are leaving. I think the issue with salem in particular is that residents are hassled if they don't have Halloween decorations up in September But that's reasonable!

I sort of get it, in that I'm from around Salem and the Halloween season has made the town genuinely uninhabitable, but also so much of this is clearly racism. (And of course a lot of the businesses in salem fed into it, but also idk if the residents deserve it!)
