In this fairly unique situation there is a way to ascertain the views of the party’s base: polling. Dem leadership has all they need in hand to make a responsible decision. They spent decades sidelining grassroots orgs, so they shouldn’t wait for them to do the hard work.

And though I think there are somewhat better (practical) candidates out there, the people selecting the new nominee would be Biden’s electors - I assume a bunch of local dem party members who had volunteered/ been selected for their loyalty, not wisdom or pragmatism.

Really good summation of things. I’ve been trying to imagine how Harris can/would perform as the top line candidate. Racism/sexism working against her is real, but could be mitigated. I just can’t forget how poor of a retail politician she was in 2020.

I believe these numbers. I don’t think she’d do so well in an open primary but I do see why she’s ahead in this context. It’s a bit like the case with Biden: if she could consistently do her best during a campaign, debates, etc, she could win, but if she is her average self or worse, she will lose.

I think Harris can be made more palatable in a general election, but she was extremely weak in the 2020 primary. The idea that a VP is a natural or correct successor to an incumbent president has been proven false over the past thirty years.
