And did the advisor really know that is how the committee would have responded? That seems like an assumption they made, possibly based on prior knowledge, possibly filtered through their own biases and concerns.

Yeah, this part is something I am still thinking through -- what would I have done as an advisor? I feel very strongly that students/people have autonomy and they get to choose, and here that bumps up against the crappy care we give to people giving birth.

I *do* think there's a larger argument in there about how we (in the US) treat folks giving birth and raising kids - if we had better structural controls around safe/comfortable births this scenario likely would not have happened - but I do not read this as an indictment against academia per se

The 2nd thing that should be highlighted is the student's quote: “It’s incredible to uplift women and show how incredibly powerful they are,” Alyza said. “I hope that people really take away from this that women are strong and resilient, tenacious, ambitious grit and they can do anything.”

I see a lot of upset about the grad student who defended right after delivering a baby, but two things should be considered: the committee had no idea the student had just given birth -- so this isn't really a reflection of them or even Rutgers.
