I don't doubt some of this stems from hostility to outsiders and would happen at any level of tourism (squirting them with water definitely isn't the answer). But I dont think many Americans grasp the sheer magnitude of visitors to these places, big and small, and how it can warp all aspects of life

For sure. I don't doubt for some this stems more from NIMBYism or outright xenophobia, and that's a bad basis for making decisions. But much like extractive economies, there are tough and messy decisions that need to be made among heightened emotions. But it should rest on the locals to make them!

Yeah, much of it is couched in the sense of "What are you complaining about, you're getting gobs of money?" It's a bit jarring to see that argument, but from some on the left. That's not what should be the deciding factor here, esp. when its clearly causing erosion in living standards in other ways

These include the strain on local resources for an uneven distribution of benefits, easy capture of those benefits to outsiders and multinationals, alienation from ones own land and home, and government over-reliance on a single resource without using its benefits to diversify the economy as a whole

Surprised by some of the reactions to the backlash against overtourism in Barcelona. Tourism counterintuitively mirrors many of the dynamics of extractive export economies and can surely be viewed as one. If improperly managed many of the same economic and social pitfalls of overmining can spring up

Estonians are this funny mix of down-to-earth and introverted yet forward thinking which I found kinda charming. Small place with great nature and lots of history. Quite inexpensive. Better beer scene than Southern Europe. All three of the Baltics are slept on, but Estonia was the coolest for me

Don't know if you remember this wild ass WaPo chart from years ago, but 35 drinks/wk barely gets you into the top decile of drinkers in the US I'm as shocked as you that it's only 2 yrs, but multiply that with the number of people who drink that much and it starts to add up to a lot of years lost

Do you remember when they did this months ago after they published a poll and the president was apparently too "business-as-usual" to somehow slip in an acknowledgement of it at an event at a train repair depot in Delaware?

Most of those cities (formerly) predominantly full of Russian speakers they claim they're defending with this war. I could be wrong, but it's almost like they don't have a strategy here, just maximal suffering for anyone in the country.

Depends on the state. In Florida, it's also a "correctable offense," and while you'll still get a ticket, it can be remedied at the county courthouse (with some processing fees, of course) within a set time period.

I dunno. The foot of an emu is pure nightmare fuel. I'd rather take my chances on a pack of hyenas. I'd probably still expire, but at least it's not with that emu nail in me.

I understand where the love of the sun comes from, but at the same time it bugs me that most people are wired to think there's something inherently wrong with you if you don't like the sun and you constantly have to explain yourself. Why is that the default in our society! There should be none

For sure, definitely one of the least surprising things about him in retrospect. You can clearly see why he's divorced and unfortunately the split only feeds into the reasons we see he's divorced. A terrible cycle that I feel sorry for anyone who had to be around him

Also, the NFP is the largest block but they are still far short of a majority. They'll have to work with the center/center-right to either set up a broad coalition or secure a minority government. So in addition to internal horse trading, this second layer should further hamper Melenchon's bid

French left parties—which won about 1/3 of all districts nationwide in yesterday's vote—won the majority of districts in all large cities... except Nice, where the far right dominated. In Lyon, Nantes, Rennes, & Strasbourg, left parties won all the seats.

Like I don't want to go all Stancil with stats vs. vibes, but people actually study this stuff, especially party manifestos, and while it's true in the 90s and early 2000s the Dems (and the country) shifted right, there's been a sharp and sustained Dem turn to the left for the last decade and a half

I know there'll always be horse trading, power struggles and hurt feelings within big sprawling parties like Dems, Liberals or Labour, but not coming out with an articulated united front based on common ground will only let people go crazy inventing backroom machinations that might not even be there

I realize it's trickier in the FPTP systems that tend to have larger center-L/R parties, where the coalition building happens within these big tent parties. But it would be nice to have the like what they had: the different camps publicly stating the immediate, common goals and plans to get there

Next task will be figuring out both the internal dynamics of the Left's front moving forward and the thornier issue of cobbling together a majority or minority government. But for now, the coming together of various factions for a common task of stemming the far right's gains seems to have worked.

Some political relief, from France this time. In the face of a snap election and a far-right surge, the broader Left quickly formed a common front and worked with Macronist liberals in the 2nd round to cordon off the far right The Left looks to be the largest block with the far right down to third

Fiona Apple also had a slightly menacing, slightly mournful, fully Fiona version of Pure Imagination in that campaign. Chipotle marketing was wylin out back then, must've been fun to be there, now they're just begging influencers to stop harassing employees about portion sizes.
