Then there are three tiny minute-long pieces of poetry from native central American peoples that make up Part II. Part III is a single 9-minute long Neruda poem. I can't really get into the structure on 1st listen. But it's all attractive though quite a different language to the symphonies.

... even kinda Shostyish at moments. It brought Shosty's 14th symphony to my mind at times even though it doesn't go into shosty-like histrionics. But even so Lynch kinda brought the same effect as Malagueña. Maybe I'm imagining things. It's an attractive work but kinda lopsided with a long part I.

I'm almost at the end of my complete Allan Pettersson odyssey. Tonight's listening is his cantata Vox humana from 1974. Like his 12th symphony it's leftist poetry from Latin America. But it's atypical Pettersson in some ways. Not so dense, more approachable...

Myös minä persialaissafkaedition: granaattiomena on just hyviä suolaisessa ruoassa ja tää on maailman parhaimpia ruokakulttuureja.
Ja ei, nää ei oo ristiriidassa keskenään koska mä päätin niin.

Is Tade (and Sade) a Yoruba name? Yoruba is IIRC a tonal language so how do the tones your name go so I can try to pronounce it correctly?

Piloilla oleva nykynuorisolainen jätti oven auki ja nyt tänne lensi ampiainen. Miksei noi piloilla olevat nykynuorisolaiset osaa laittaa väliovea kiinni perässään? Must tulee ihan boomeri kohta ton oven takia.

Am I too thin-skinned? If I see jokey pronouns in bio I'm not gonna follow back? It might just be a bad sense of humor (guilty, so not gonna complain about that) but it might be transphobia. In fact it's most likely to be both?

Those are interesting random choices. Both were written for London audiences though only 102 belongs to the London Symphonies. And 102 is not among the best known of the Londons (though it should be!). I'll give my vote to 102 because it's mature Haydn and one his best symphonies but I love 77 too.

This podcast thinks we geeks will debate passionately about whether we prefer a certain symphony or other by Bruckner or Mahler but not by Haydn. She takes Haydn's 77 and 102 as humorous examples. But I know we geeks are better than this.
Are you team 77 or 102? :D

I was recommended the Honeck on twitter and listened to it at work today. Really exciting. I like that kind of Beethoven. Szell is such an obvious name I should have thought it myself.

Huh. This is weird. I'm not usually a big Beethoven symphony type of gal but today I've had his 3rd playing in my brain. What recordings of the 3rd do you all like? I have Monteux on LP and a CD of Kleiber sr. and both are pretty exciting. Who else? What should I put on now?

Jordan (and before the war Syria) is a paradise for history/archaeology nerds. Everywhere you look there's something interesting. Enjoy the trip!

Oh I miss Jordan. Used to travel semi-frequently in the NE for archaeology. Have you visited Qusayr Amra? Fascinating early Islamic place (qusayr literally means little castle but was like a hunting lodge) where they used Byzantine artists.

Mitäs jos sana "koirot" lausuttais kuten Hercule Poirot: kwarõ. Mä aion nyt ärsyttää uudella ääntämistavalla kaikki koirojen hoomanit.

Happy 164th b-day to MAHLER!!!! He was so great a composer he always makes me feel a little smahler. Listening to him today? Do share with me your fave recording! I'll start: Kondrashin in the 7th and not the very good Amsterdam one but the wilder even more nightmarish Leningrad one!

Bicycling is dangerous. I biked to get some takeaway for dinner and I saw a rabbit on my way back. I've seen the documentary Monty Python and the Holy Grail so I know exactly how dangerous those creatures are. It's a miracle I'm still alive.

Why do you hate the pic? There really is nothing wrong with it. Quite the contrary: it makes me want to sit in a chair and discuss Rosewater with you. The Rosewater books are still some of my fave scifi I have ever read.

You know what's so funny? Over on shitter, I have a both a Marxist and a capitalist who are really annoyed with me just now. I think that proves arachno-socialism and arachno-syndicalism must be right. Long live spider-based socio-economic theories. :D

It's a pretty good one but the sound (at least in the performance available on YouTube) sounds a little claustrophobic and boxed in. But I think he paces and phrases it well. I just wish the bass would sound more. I wonder if if could be remastered to bring out the bass and volume range?

Oh no. Shosty Symphony performances are going to suck now. They need to be properly noisy at certain points.
