Ranting is good, don't apologize. I guess the good thing about these people is that they're trying? But they are also not listening to us n-b people when we say that joking about pronouns isn't funny or appropriate. So it isn't active hostility but is obstinate cluelessness. Not a blocking offense.

There are a couple classical music people on twitter who seem like ok people and claim not be transphobic but who still have joke pronouns in bio so I haven't followed them back. Sometimes like I feel like I should give them the benefit of the doubt but maybe not. I don't know.

Sometimes touristy places are really, really cool and Petra deffo counts. Your Jordan posts make me wanna go back. I miss the place. I also did a hike to Jabal Haroun about 10km away from Petra since Finland used to have an archaeology project there. <3

This morning's listening has mostly been Sibelius's Wood-Nymph. An early work with some really lovely moments in it and a very harrowing, dramatic final movement of inconsolable grief. Fun stuff.

Just the six early songs and the Barfotasånger. I really look forward to these for two reasons: 1) I know a lot of them are used in the symphonies so they're kind of like Mahler's Lieder in that sense and 2) they're sung by Peter Mattei who has a lovely baritone voice. <3

Then there are three tiny minute-long pieces of poetry from native central American peoples that make up Part II. Part III is a single 9-minute long Neruda poem. I can't really get into the structure on 1st listen. But it's all attractive though quite a different language to the symphonies.

... even kinda Shostyish at moments. It brought Shosty's 14th symphony to my mind at times even though it doesn't go into shosty-like histrionics. But even so Lynch kinda brought the same effect as Malagueña. Maybe I'm imagining things. It's an attractive work but kinda lopsided with a long part I.

I'm almost at the end of my complete Allan Pettersson odyssey. Tonight's listening is his cantata Vox humana from 1974. Like his 12th symphony it's leftist poetry from Latin America. But it's atypical Pettersson in some ways. Not so dense, more approachable...

Those are interesting random choices. Both were written for London audiences though only 102 belongs to the London Symphonies. And 102 is not among the best known of the Londons (though it should be!). I'll give my vote to 102 because it's mature Haydn and one his best symphonies but I love 77 too.

This podcast thinks we geeks will debate passionately about whether we prefer a certain symphony or other by Bruckner or Mahler but not by Haydn. She takes Haydn's 77 and 102 as humorous examples. But I know we geeks are better than this.

Oh I miss Jordan. Used to travel semi-frequently in the NE for archaeology. Have you visited Qusayr Amra? Fascinating early Islamic place (qusayr literally means little castle but was like a hunting lodge) where they used Byzantine artists.

Bicycling is dangerous. I biked to get some takeaway for dinner and I saw a rabbit on my way back. I've seen the documentary Monty Python and the Holy Grail so I know exactly how dangerous those creatures are. It's a miracle I'm still alive.

It's a pretty good one but the sound (at least in the performance available on YouTube) sounds a little claustrophobic and boxed in. But I think he paces and phrases it well. I just wish the bass would sound more. I wonder if if could be remastered to bring out the bass and volume range?
