That is such a piss poor grasp of what happens in that musical and in that film.
In all the layers of music, how that music came to be, how the dialogue got written, who wrote it, why they wrote it that way.
To go, “oh, I like the color and the cinematography.” Is just fucking lazy.

By 1983, La Cage is now a musical on Broadway. Who directed it?
Arthur Laurents.
So calling the film adaptation, “The Birdcage” is actually a reference back to Arthur Laurents original musical in 1950 by the same name.

In 1950, Arthur Laurents wrote a musical called The Birdcage about a sleazy nightclub. The plot isn’t the same as La Cage, and certainly didn’t have the gay elements.
In 1973, La Cage is a French play with most of the elements we recognize from the current plot, not only a shady nightclub but gay.

My Wikipedia digging also answered a long standing question I’ve had. Why is the film adaptation of the musical La Cage aux Folles called The Birdcage, when La Cage aux Folles translates to “The Cage of the Madwomen”?
And I found my answer.

The thing I learned was that EVERYONE WHO CREATED THIS MUSICAL WAS GAY.
Bernstein wrote the music: confirmed Queer.
Laurents wrote the book: confirmed Queer.
Sondheim wrote the lyrics: confirmed Queer.
Robbins directed and choreographed: confirmed Queer.

If you have 20 minutes, this is an interesting look into the musicology, composition, and context of this specific song.

I say July 13? Because their website is expired. They never get their shit together until about a week before it happens. You have to watch their Facebook page to see what is happening and exact dates. But it’s one if my favorite Prides.

Also, I’m planning on meeting up with some people for Vancouver, WA Pride in the Park at Esther Short Park on July 13? I really like the Pride in the Park there. It’s super relaxing, you can just wander around with lots of space. Lots of local vendors next to the farmer’s market. Not corporate.

Also, outside of Pride stuff, check this site out. It has just queer stuff happening in Portland every single day.

Pride Northwest is the best for the Portland area. They mostly get along, sort of, these days.

Roberts’ wife works as a “recruiter” at a major law firm that frequently represents clients in front of the Supreme Court.
She has earned millions of dollars through that deal. She at least has the sense to keep her mouth shut about it, something that Martha and Ginni couldn’t imagine.

There was a whole trans polycule that spins their own yarn at my little Vancouver, WA Pride this year. They aren’t going to Portland Pride. It’s too expensive.

Oh no! There’s an interesting dynamic here in the Portland area of main PDX Pride versus the suburb Prides, and I think the suburb Prides are winning.
PDX Pride is just corporate booths. No local artistry.
The suburb Prides are where you find artists now here.

We didn’t have any sign wavers. In fact, the body language of the evangelicals showed that they didn’t even want to be there.
Actually, that’s not why this was my favorite Pride. This was my favorite Pride because there were very few corporate booths. Mostly all local artists.

This past weekend was a big adjustment for me.
My city had one of its local Pride festivals.
There were about 5 evangelicals and 5 anarchist queers screaming at each other at the perimeter.
And I guess I’m glad they were there to do their thing, but I just liked the spaces of queer joy instead

My favorite new trick is to scramble the eggs, salt them, and then WAIT 15 minutes before you cook them. It gives the salt time to break down the cell structures and give a consistent and fluffy texture. No added milk, water, or cheese needed.
