Closer to Jesus' Son or Tree of Smoke, would you say? I ask because they're the only two things I've read by him, and I found TOS jarring and really difficult (I read JS first and was hoping for more of that)

It's much more like Jesus' Son, and in some ways a dry run for it, with its portrayal of doomed losers that the author desperately wants to save from their preordained fates.
