To add to this. Hiberno-English is one of the few versions that has the habitual "be" - to differentiate between transient and permanent states. The only other one, afaik, is AAVE. The thought is that Irish immigrants taught this to Black Americans as they interacted very often with each other.

I see everyone liking and sharing this, and I think it’s important to recognize Miyazaki is a grouch because he’s a rabid anti-nationalist and pacifist with socialist leanings who absolutely-hated Shinzo Abe, hated Japan’s denial of its past, he hates Trump, Boris Johnson, and Hilary Clinton.

Unfortunately, the party that will replace them is predominantly Islamophobic, institutionally transphobic, and wedded to neo-liberal austerity economics, so any happiness will be fleeting.

Thinking now of all the FBPE types who abominated the previous Labour leader because he wanted to abide by the Brexit vote but offered a softer Brexit, with single market/customs union privileges. Wondering how they're doing.

I quite like that when you block someone they completely disappear, but there's times when you want to peek behind the block like you could on twitter, and you just can't. Still better than twitter though.

I have a suspicion that if Dr Juggs blocked that person, then her repost shows up as "blocked" for us all. Still not quite clear on how blocks work on here tbh

Dublin, the most heavily populated part of Ireland, is filled with empty and derelict housing, because the laws meant to tax property owners for dereliction are not enforced. But yeah, "Ireland is full" supposedly.

oh lord, yeah it is really worrying, the govt has created a housing crisis, the migrant crisis is a separate issue, but the fash are skilled at conflating the two... meanwhile the papers are full of stories of rapes and assaults carried out by white Irish men, but they get very little traction.

Good stuff. The film was also a very obvious influence on Frank Henenlotter's Frankenhooker, even down to casting an eerily similar-looking male lead.

Well hopefully you won't be exposed to any of it, I'm just finding it incredibly depressing to see it start to show its ugly face after a few decades of being unacceptable.

Baltimore John Waters, as I ascertained some years ago, gets all the news on his Irish counterpart, hopefully he will enjoy getting this one:

This is the same John Waters who successfully sued RTE when Rory O'Neill aka Panti described him as 'homophobic' several years back. The Streisand Effect around that case made Panti an international media figure. Waters has said if he lost the Holland case he would be "ruined". Let's hope.

Some good news for a change as nutcase anti-abortion activist & former Irish Times journalist John Waters (no not that one) loses a High Court defamation case and has to pay €35K damages against the writer he defamed, Kitty Holland of the very same Irish Times.

Folks, I'm not going to lie -- I am utterly gleeful over the fact that not only do I have a short piece in the newest issue of #TheWire, which focuses on the soundworlds of #DavidLynch in many areas, but that I am surely the first person to seriously discuss the work of Toto there as a result.

It would be great if Ireland had some non-white news media figures who could convey how quickly we are sliding down the slope to openly expressed racism

for these people the mere presence of any nonwhite person, and especially any black person, in a desired and prestigious position is on its face evidence of anti-white discrimination and unfair preferences.

And once it’s deemed okay to say things we previously deemed unsayable, because we used to, for a while, make racist speech a signifier of someone who is beyond the pale, and don’t any more… then it snowballs.
