הנה שוב. הגיבורה מסתכלת על כרזה, מתרגזת, מועכת את הדף ועושה ממנו כדור. שתי פיסקאות הלאה היא שוב מסתכלת בכרזה, בלי שכתוב שפרסה שוב את הדף. כמה פסקאות אחרי זה היא שוב מתעצבנת ומועכת את הכרזה לכדור, בלי לציין שזאת פעולה שכבר נעשתה. סתם רשלנות בכתיבה…

עד איזה גבול? על זה אפשר להתווכח. השבוע במפגש עם ילדים, שאלו אותי אם לפעמים אני רוצה שדמות מסויימת לא תמות אז אני מתרגמת שהיא לא מתה. זה, לדוגמה, לא היה עולה על דעתי. אבל לשנות מרגרינה לחומוס, כי זה ממרח יותר מוכר לילדים בישראל וגם פותר לי בעיות במשקל של שיר - עשיתי בעבר. (הסופר התלהב ממש)

אילו התייחסתי בחרדת קודש לכל פסיק ומילה שנכתבה, וביקשתי רשות על כל סטייה זעירה, זה היה משתק אותי. לא יכולתי לתרגם. בטח שלא תרגום *טוב*. לא תמיד יש אפשרות לפנות לסופר/ת ולבקש רשות: לפעמים הם אינם בחיים, או סתם לא נגישים. מתרגמים *חייבים* להפעיל פרשנות ושיקול דעת.

או, בחזרה לדוגמה שאיתה התחלנו: בהנחה שהסופרת התבלבלה ולא שמה לב שהיא פעם כתבה שהלחם פרוס, ופעם שהלחם שלם, וזה עניין שיש בו חשיבות בטקסט: האם נכון לשמר את השגיאה שלה רק כי זה מה שהודפס וזה קדוש? או שסביר יותר להניח שאילו תפסה את זה בזמן, היא בעצמה היתה מתקנת, ומודה למי שמצא את השגיאה וחסך לה פדיחה?

ברור שיש עורכים, אבל מה זה שינויים ״מופלגים״? תרגום הוא בהכרח שינוי. בתרגומים נעשים לפעמים גם התאמות תרבותיות מסוימות. האם שינוי שמטרתו להנגיש את המקור לקהל היעד החדש הוא שינוי ״מופלג״? האם הוא חוטא למקור? ואולי דווקא אי-שינוי חוטא למקור, כי הטקסט המתורגם לא מעביר לקוראים את כוונת המחבר?

מה שאני מנסה להגיד זה שלא מדובר בעניין מוגדר, ואין רגולציה. מי יבדוק? מי יאכוף? באיזו סמכות ובאיזו טריטוריה? יש נורמות מסוימות, יש תרבות מוסכמת, יש חוזים פרטניים שקצת מעגנים את המוסכמות הללו, אבל לדבר על ״חירויות״ של מתרגמים זה קצת נאיבי. מה החירויות של סופרים? מה מותר להם לכתוב?

ברוב החוזים יש ניסוחים מסויימים שמכוונים לתרגום ״נאמן למקור״ ״בשלמותו״ ו״ברמה המקצועית הגבוהה ביותר״, אבל מה זה אומר בדיוק זאת כבר שאלה פילוסופית. הכוונה למנוע שיכתוב ו/או קיצור משמעותיים, החדרת פרסומות ועוד כל מיני זוועות (יש תקדימים). אבל נראה לך שמישהו יתבע אותי על תיקון טעות סופר בתום לב?

פעם ראשונה שאני מתרגמת ספר וחושבת בכזאת תדירות ״איפה הי/תה העורך/ת״. החל בדמות משנית ששמה מתחלף, פעם ככה פעם ככה; ז׳קט שבמפורש השאירו אותו מאחור ופתאום הגיבורה לובשת אותו, כיכר לחם שהפכה לפרוסות לחם ואז שוב לכיכר לחם שיש לפרוס - איזה בלגן! ספר מסחרי די מצליח ככל הידוע לי.

אתמול הגעתי עד 22:00 בלילה לפני שהתחילה מיגרנה, אבל אז היא היתה קשה יחסית. הלכתי לישון כשראשי עטוף בקומפרסים מהמקפיא, באחת בלילה עוד קמתי להחליף קומפרסים, היה זוועה. היום היה התחלה של משהו אולי אבל הצלחתי לקטוע אותו באיבו, לצורך העניין יום טוב. בגדול חל שיפור בחודשים האחרונים אבל זה עדיין מייגע כ״כ.

You would fit in our family so well. My nephew had an accident with his scooter yesterday - broke his wrist and cracked two vertebrae in his neck. It was very tense for a while, but from the moment we gathered prognosis was good, the jokes and puns have been FLYING. That’s how we cope.

how the brakes work, why we need to be careful going over bumps, etc. I always thought this was super useful and taught me a lot - do you think otherwise? Or that the circumstances differ? In my case it was a voluntary course only for kids who wanted to handle their friends’ wheelchairs.

In fourth grade I was in a school in California that was a magnet for kids with various disabilities. My best friend was in a wheelchair: I needed to apply for a “permit” to push her chair, and part of the training was experiencing a wheelchair myself, trying to maneuver it so we could understand >

I’ve never tried wearing her designs, but I have stickers, pouches, mugs, and even Covid masks I sewed from her patterns. Not to mention art framed on my wall, and covers she’s drawn for books I’ve published. Oh wait! There was a T-shirt too, my daughter’s favorite until she outgrew it.

I’ve always had this difficulty thinking about Roald Dahl, who was both a bigot and a hero, as far as I know. Allegedly he beat and abused his wife, but also nursed her with extreme devotion when she took ill. He was a flaming antisemite, but promoted vaccine awareness following personal tragedy.

I guarantee their are other things you don’t know about authors who wrote the books you love: not only things they did wrong, but wrongs that were done to them. Deep dark secrets cut both ways. Do they change the words that were written and loved? Maybe. But nothing cancels out.

Loving the books is not equivalent to condoning anything and everything the author may have done in their lives. This goes for J.K. Rowling as well, and Woody Allen, and J.D. Salinger, and others. You didn’t know. Now you know. The love doesn’t evaporate, though it may be forever tainted.

I don’t think there’s a single right way to go about it, just as there isn’t a single right way to grieve over a death. It’s okay to give away those books. It’s okay to reread them. You didn’t do anything wrong by loving them.

I understand grief and disappointment and anger. I understand denial, I understand a need to divorce creators from their works, I understand withholding judgement l, I understand people who just want to not think about it at all. I think we should recognize that the exposure of idols is painful.

But I do feel there’s a sort of exorcism that takes place on social media that is partly personal and partly performative, and people take their cues from each other as to how they’re expected to behave right now. People have literally ASKED me what they should do about these revelations.

Interesting to me that I see people responding to recent disclosures about Alice Munro with grief, but to disclosures about Neil Gaiman with anger - at least that’s what it looks like. I’ve seen people claim they’re getting rid of Gaiman books, but that they intend to reread Munro, in a new light.
