i bought a house that was honestly in pretty amazing condition and we still did like $15k-$20k worth of upgrades during the move there's often a lot of stuff to fix up preemptively even if nothing stands out as catastrophically broken

We are extremely lucky to have a former contractor friend who is now a literal professor of carpentry. I had a general sense that we were in some kind of danger considering this house but he was very clear it was "do not touch this with a ten foot pole" danger
