Also, the American education system explicitly promotes the idea of the US as a democracy since its foundation. American history classes are hagiographic by design leading to a deliberate culture of ignorance. That's why most native born Americans couldn't pass their own citizenship exam if pressed.

I have had teachers at all levels of the system, up to and including professors, insist to me that the US has always been a democracy, just with some exceptions (women, slaves and other minorities) and kinks to to be worked out. It is, and always has been, A Shining Beacon On The Hill (tm).

This is all no less true for it, but pretty much every nation-state teaches it own national history to the exclusion of others and does in both exceptionalist and hagiographic ways. The thing of it all is that those teachers are also ordinary citizens who might not pass that test
