Went The Day Well is on Talking Pictures about half three this afternoon. Perfect.
It’s probably my favourite war film. It’s so, so good. You think it’s going to be quaint, but it’s brutal. And cool.
THORA HIRD HAS A LEE ENFIELD RIFLE AND IS TAKING NONE OF YOUR SHIT, MR HITLER.
I wonder if they knew anything about the invasion resistance plans - auxiliary units etc - because the film really chimes with Churchill's intended "you can always take one with you" message.
Perhaps that attitude was in the air.
I rushed back from a shopping trip to watch it - even though I’ve had it on DVD for decades - because communal weekend war film watching is the kind of British spirit that this film celebrates. And it did not disappoint. It’s edited like a bloody threshing machine. So fantastic.
One of my top war films too, some shocking moment in it, absolutely wonderful film.
It forms a trilogy in my head with "The Way Ahead" and "Life and times of Colonel Blimp"
A great film. I was particularly impressed by the final act, when they get some actual British soldiers involved, and they are terrifyingly efficient. There's a palpable difference between actors and professional military, and it's so clear in this film. (See also the final episode of Wish Me Luck)
I used to have a thing that whenever a Twitter account did an obvious Russian bot fuckup, like not knowing "Brum" is Birmingham, I would reply "Went the day well?"
Because of this, all the Russian bots gave up.
