The pre-modern English didn't have a monopoly on eel metaphors. The French had some awesome ones, too! My favorite is this enjoyable expression that means to try to do something impossible: "rompre l'anguille au genou" -- to break an eel over your knee (like a stick). πŸ—ƒοΈπŸ§ͺ
