It is indeed more challenging to detect smaller exoplanets than larger ones. The ability to characterize their atmospheres depends on where the exoplanet is located. JWST is powerful but limited, hence the need for Habitable Worlds Observatory.

Team Uranus (including me, led by Larry Sromovsky) just published "an exceptionally comprehensive analysis" of Keck 🔭 Uranus images/spectra, "a masterclass in image analysis from authors at the height of their image-processing powers" (quotes from Reviewer 1) authors.elsevier.com/c/1jKGL_Rp9u...

JWST 🔭 infrared images reveal complex H3+ ionospheric emission above and around Jupiter's Great Red Spot. Possible cause: gravity waves from the lower atmosphere breaking in ionosphere.

And on the end was Raja Roy, who perhaps I should not have characterized as a historian, but more someone who studies institutional change in an evolving tech environment, and who brought his experience with int'l engagement to the panel: www.researchgate.net/profile/Raja...

Except for me, they were all historians. My lone voice was as a scientist who lived through and worked within the field during this transitional period.

A strange event happened in 1975, when a nova called HM Sagittae grew 250 times brighter as it ingested gas from a bloated red giant companion it is orbiting. It never really faded away as novas commonly do, but has maintained its brightness for decades. (1/5) 🧵 🔭 🧪

RIP Ed Stone, long-time leader of the Voyager mission. I learned so much from him during the Neptune encounter: both how to maximize science and how to share science with the world. He was also a genuinely nice person. Sincere condolences to Ed's family and close friends.

Hey here's you're reminder: You're not too old to pick up a pen and learn to draw. You're not too old to learn an instrument. You're not too old to learn to sculpt, or write a book. You are not too old to create things.

Yowza, JWST 🔭! The redshift of galaxy "JADES-GS-z14-0" is z = 14.32 (+0.08/-0.20), making it the current record-holder for the most distant known galaxy. This corresponds to a time less than 300 million years after the big bang. blogs.nasa.gov/webb/2024/05...

5/24/2024: There aren't a lot of places in the world where you can take these two photographs on the same day: Galapagos penguin and American flamingo! The Galapagos archipelago has a unique combination of cold marine currents and dry, tropical lowlands. Pix taken yesterday by my friend E. J. Simon.

A blue-footed booby and his three-week old baby booby; we saw another who was incubating two eggs. These were right on the trail above the green sand beach at Punta Pitt, which just opened to tourists a few weeks ago.

Maybe it's just me, but this new DECam image sure looks like a cosmic shai-hulud emerging from nebular dust to snap up a galaxy ... in reality, it is a "cometary globule" which has nothing to actually do with comets. More details and a high-res image at noirlab.edu/public/image... 🔭
