it's wild that we adopted this moral line but not "wow torture sucks actually" to the point where torture is a mostly unexamined and totally accepted part of Batman's toolkit, usually depicted as getting info from thugs. but man, even 24 kinda walked back the torture thing a bit before the end!!
This is my fave part of Batman: Reptilian - Ennis implicitly highlighting how a normal person wouldn't need to say they don't kill people, sort of like "My 'I don't kill' Batsuit has people asking a lot of questions that are already answered by my Batsuit"
Not killing the villain allows a sequel, and in many cases allows the whole story to even happen. People, as always, confused a narrative device for a moral lesson.
and btw, Daredevil makes Batman look like a saint. His MO is just to head to a bar and beat up EVERYBODY until somebody talks. Literally just treats poor people like stress balls
to add to that - its shocking how many times I have seen "I know torture is bad, that is why I am going to let this guy do it" in stories with out any irony or examination of what that means.
