My left af nonbinary queer partner came from a poor family and wanted to go to college so they enlisted.
Wanting to go to college and being forced into the military is not a political party. It's our government being fucking predators and using the cycle of poverty to keep its death machine.
i think the hardliner stance is, if you want to go to college (or otherwise materially improve life for yourself/your family) and the only reasonable path is enlistment then... tough titties! you still shouldnt do it, the correct option is to remain impoverished
i don't think thats a fair shake tho
I've said this before but the current/former enlisted people I know are like 50/50 left-liberal/right.
The officers I know are 20/20/60 left/right/fully-fascist
The conservatives arguing student debt relief should be struck down because it hurt their states' ability to recruit for the National Guard was especially remarkable. It's unconstitutional to give poor people a break
Look at the class/racial breakdown of who's actually enlisted right now.
There are a lot of marginalized people there, and the marginalized often vote for the party that will better serve their community needs.
saw how this worked first hand and it saddened me, because both of those things are true. those programs are keeping those kids out of the streets but they’re not in all public schools, they’re in the poorest neighborhoods of the poorest towns. i saw a kid, he had to be like 10, maybe 12, in gear
I asked all the women in my basic training squad why they enlisted. Over half mentioned medical care for an exceptional family member, ie. One who couldn’t be covered before the ACA. One mom left her kids and husband and semi-successful career bc her MIL needed tricare or she would die.
