First of all, has a person ever looked more mischievous? I wish I knew her. Secondly, this is a miniature portrait from around 1660. It comes with overlays that allow you to change her appearance for fun. Filters from 500 years ago lol!

ooooooh good theory. I'm not, I'll admit, well informed enough to give any examples from the 1820s or the 1720s, but as long as there's nobody who IS an expert to tell us otherwise...

currently reading a book from the 1920s and there's a character in it who's younger than all the others and finds it very embarrassing and stressful when the adults make sex jokes, which if it's been going on for a literal century might just be... normal? for a lot of teenagers

I don't thiiiink so, the room they're mostly in doesn't get any direct sunlight on the ground, but... maybe? I'll try an experiment...

left: balls our cats have hidden behind bookshelves, recently retrieved right: balls our cats have left lying out on the floor what does this mean! I thought cats barely saw colour! Do the green-blue ones get hidden because the cats hate them or because they treasure them dearly?

Belated "my book is out" newsletter!

Also feat: a book tour, and what that was like! Going on live television, and that specific strange experience! Plus: are my cats still perfect? Impossible to say without reading

I also really disliked "Lord of the Dance", thinking about it. Maybe anything where the rhythm was a little less traditionally slow and hymn-y and so harder for seven hundred bored girls to sing in unison.

I particularly hated "Imagine", which was a weird one for a church-affiliated school to have us sing, and now of course it's very fashionable to hate

talking to my brother who was in Scotland for the northern lights and it's been very comforting. "Kinda pretty" is his conclusion. Sort-of fine. Bit boring. Not terrible but 100% not worth leaving the house for.

Every year the University of Chicago has a book sale with 90% off a bunch of fascinating, obscure titles on art, history, science, writing, you name it. Most of the books are under $10, and you won't find most of them outside an academic library. Check it out: press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/vi...

Thank you! In theory I'm definitely looking for a one-museum kind of day but I guess sometimes once you start you just keep museuming, and I do love the idea of a place in LA where there's more than one thing without an intervening car trip

Halima is great and has done a bunch of cool games work (she was also an early reader on The Husbands and was SO good at thoughts-and-feedback-and-sense-checking)

however if you are okay with not having data outside Europe and you want to pay a bafflingly small amount amount for your standard monthly phone use then I recommend Giffgaff very strongly

goodbye giffgaff! I'm so sorry! I loved that you barely existed and were so cheap! I even loved the old days when you'd suddenly not work for 8-12 hours! But I cannot pay 20p/mb for data in the US while going on a book tour! I get lost too easily! I don't know how to use a compass!

tragically have to finally leave giffgaff, the made-up phone service provider who have charged me £10 a month for a decade and who occasionally message and say eg "this month you could have got by with our £7.50 package so we've refunded you £2.50, buy yourself a nice little icecream"

This seems smart, especially if you don't really need the checked luggage space for a particular trip!

I've read about packing for book tours, and everyone says "only take a carry-on". But I hate fighting for overhead luggage space so much! So I'm gonna check a case! come along to see if this backfires & my case gets lost & I have to improvise an outfit from a hotel curtain tie and a CVS nightgown

ha I have been to Copenhagen and to various grocery shops there so probably that was why the bag pinged my "THIS will work" sense when I saw the picture. And ooh, dunno about printings - it definitely can't be a *bad* sign, right? So thank you!!

ended up searching through a bunch of European grocery bags and the Netto ones were the most convincingly cool-in-a-weird-way ones that came up!

Oh thank you so much for telling me, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! And the Netto bag thing is great. I spent AGES trying to think of an object that fit there, something cheap but slightly funny and plausibly something a person might have a little aesthetic or sentimental attachment to -
