Also trying to find housing in Halifax is not exactly representative. The housing crisis is a real problem, but Halifax is the most expensive place to live on the East Coast, so y'know. Try a smaller city. It's still pretty affordable to live in New Brunswick and other parts of Nova Scotia.

My spouse is an American who immigrated to Canada because it was way the fuck easier than me trying to immigrate to the US. So that comment made me laugh. No immigration policies are perfect, but the comparison here was way off. XD

It's accurate to varying degrees around the country, except the immigration comment about it being fucked up. As someone who tried to immigrate to the US and was unable to work or leave the country for 6 years (yes 6), three months is laughable. Also Canada at least lets you leave the country.

As those two things are diametrically opposed. I will say that I think intelligent people can disagree about these things. Because interpretation of both the political philosophies themselves, and of past modern politics for which varying analysis does exists, all play a role in categorization.

I guess what I am saying, is that the Republican rejection of core tenants of liberalism, is a big part of how they philosophically have justified their transition into a populist, explicitly authoritarian party. I don't think you can both think the Republicans are authoritarian and also liberal.

Granted, and that selective personhood is exactly what happened throughout much of the early US history, of course. But even granting that, the Republican push to undermine free elections in a variety of ways is literally anathema to Liberalism, which was at its core a rejection of absolute rule.

Yep, and that's why I don't describe myself as a liberal. But that said, if one looks at a broad definition/history of liberalism, it's fair to say that it espouses values about freedom, equality, and the integrity of democratic elections that modern Republicans reject, and have long rejected.

For a little while I was a kid exploring worlds in my head. I will never forget that short period of my life, because it was utterly formative. It was the spark that made me fall in love with world-building, and that's been a big part of my hobbies ever since.

I was consumed by it for almost an entire year. It's not that it was a game that took a year to play, not by any means. But it captured my imagination so thoroughly that I filled a notebook with writing and pictures and symbols, imagining strange worlds into existence through observational notes.

When I played Riven, it was unlike anything I'd ever seen before in my entire life. I didn't know what I was getting into, it was like opening a wardrobe and stepping into another world that you had no idea existed, or even could exist. It was fucking magical, I can't stress this enough.

All you had to go on, most of the time, were some screenshots on the back of the box, a bit of flavor text describing the game. So every time you bought (or asked for as your one big holiday gift, tbh) or rented something, it was a bit of a leap of faith. It had a kind of meta-explorative quality.

I realize this is old-person talk now, but I remember playing Riven as a kid. Playing a game for the first time back then was a very different experience. Games were still kind of a novel concept, genres weren't this heavily defined thing like they are now, they weren't marketed outside magazines.
