Just finished binging The Fall of the House of Usher. Sad to think that the only taste of “justice” we get to feel over the filthy rich is merely fictional.

The honesty in this announcement and all that goes into a semi-pro mag that loves its writers, all the struggles to get attention, it hurt to read. The short fiction landscape definitely feels like it’s at a critical nexus and no one has yet found a sustainable new model.

To be honest, the sff community (scene?) cannot survive if people believe volunteer-run semi-pro venues run on good will *only*. and that the efforts of unpaid editors and staff are just hobbyist. (believe me: all editors work like pros). we cannot sustain such an eco-system!

Anyways. I don't have a solution for the 'English speakers hate translations', but it's equally frustrating and infuriating that bc of that you don't get to read amazing stuff written by talented authors outside your culture.

I've translated a sample of an amazing dystopian fantasy with fascist critique, female rage and monsterf*cking for an amazing Brazilian author to try to get a grant to translate the rest of it. It's a long shot, but we're try. We're always trying.

Not by accident, in Brazil we have the opposite problem: Brazilians hate reading Brazilians. If it's not a translation, it's not good. Why? I have two words for you: cultural colonialism.

Are any of these translated? Of course not. One could argue that this is because agents and publishers don't really try to sell outside of Brazil, but... this is bc it's hard as hell. Bc English speaking countries are not that interested in publishing a translated work.

This is a person that devotes her time and energy to follow up on translated SFFH. She knows the field, she encourages it. In Brazil alone we have a bunch of presses and zines publishing sci-fi. "Olhos de Pixel" (Pixel Eyes) is an amazing one, as well as "Senciente Nível 5" (Sentient Level 5)

Coincidentally, on the very next day I was forwarded the following tweet by Rachel Cordasco:

"A question I've had for a while now: is science fiction not being written very much around the world these days, or is it just not being translated into English?"

This is a prize-winning best-seller by a renowned author in Japan, a first-world country. If the publisher feels the need to point that out to the reader (to not be 'put off' by a translation) can you imagine what that means for writers from Latin America writing short genre fiction?>>>

I just picked up a copy of 'Lonely Castle in the Mirror' by Mizuki Tsujimura and this was one of praises for the book, on the very first page: "please don't be put off by the fact it's a translation".>>>

Resurrecting from the dead here bc I Have Something To Say.
I'm a part of the editorial team at @eitamagsff.bsky.social, publishing only Brazilian voices. As such, we deal with a particularly tricky sub-segment of SFFH: translated works.
And man, let me tell you: most English speakers hate that.>>>

I can't emphasise enough how important subscriptions are for magazines. The money to pay writers and artists has to come from somewhere. If you read short stories and have the means, seriously consider supporting one or two of your favourites by subscribing. It will literally keep them afloat.

Real talk.

We need 300 new subscribers (including renewals) to keep publishing issues at our current size. If we don't get hit that number we will need to scale back the magazine size.

Help us keep our size (or increase it!) over the next two weeks!

I wish we spent more time teaching accessibility as an investment rather than a charitable act. It's clear that for some folks self-interest will always trump altruism and so I feel like we have to meet them where they're at: If you don't prioritize this now, it won't be there when you need it later
