Congrats to the GOAT for getting the recognition he’s deserved for a long, long time.
As of yesterday, Josh Gibson now officially holds the MLB record for batting average, slugging, and OPS.
That's great, but there will forever be an asterisk next to his name. The standards & quality of play in the Negro Leagues did not match that of MLB. Equipment, pitching, bats, etc. It's not a fair comparison. So enjoy this celebration of a great athlete, but it's still comparing apples to oranges.
He deserves all the recognition in the world but he was deliberately excluded from the MLB so to call him an “MLB” leader is to erase history. Shakeia Taylor is the best sportswriter to read on this topic.
I was a little shocked the day this was announced to hear an NPR anchor say, "Many of our listeners may not know the name..." Dude, I don't even like sports and I knew who Josh Gibson was and why he was remembered.
To explain for the cheap seats, this is MLB finally recognizing the Negro Leagues as “Major League-level competition,” not adjacent or separate or less than.
And if you complain that the Negro teams never competed against the white teams, well… there’s a reason for that. Remember what it was?
This is as it should be. Colour, Nationality, Spiritual belief system et al, have no place in the discussion. The person who does it best is the best. Period.
Now, if we need to keep a different set of stats for those who are juiced versus non-juiced, this might be worth the discussion.
