I don’t think that’s a big contradiction. It’s always a bit awkward when it comes to „I know it if I see it“ situations. I think the principle of player skill over character ability still applies. It’s just not an absolute dogma.

The mecha hack is super fun if you’re looking for an action movie mecha feel. Salvage union is a great grungy ttrpg with a lot of customization but in a manageable way. I like the book a lot and hope to play it soon.

How could I forget mausritter in this answer 🤯 I think it’s so be of the best game to introduce player and gms to an osr mindset. And the mausritter book has some of the best advice on how to run an osr game I know. It’s so concise and helpful. Great book with a ton of great adventu

Totally agree with white box. I would maybe add mausritter and the black hack to the mix.

In terms of adventures a couple modern classics to start with are: winters daughter, willoby hall, tomb raiders of the crystal frontier, desert moon of karth, gradient descent, lair of the lamb. These are in no particular order and there are tons and tons more to explore.

System wise I would say white box fmag (free) or if you want a deluxe feel OSE are great retro clones and a good reference to classic osr. Mothership, Cairn and into the odd are a great start if you want to see the current state of game design.

I use obsidian with some basic plugins for this. I mostly use excalidraw though because that’s how I can think best but it’s very customizable

I also like decisive games but some of the mechanics are just too random with too little player agency.

Understand. While I love Ben Milton’s videos and insights, I often find his rules are too punishing. Same for maze rats for example. I dig the game but find the base difficulty just too high.

While you’re checking out the wonderful world of forbidden psalm you might also want to check out the world of #turnip28. They’re currently working on a skirmish variant as well but even the full size is really small and so flavorful

What’s the main thing that puts you off? And is it more related to retro clones or also related to adjacent games like into the odd?

One game that takes this concept to an extreme (as you can’t do it without the skill) and ditches stats because of that would be crown and skull by runehammer. You can download the players guide free on their website. It’s an interesting game with really cool ideas

3d6dtl is I think one of the best representations of „classic“ osr play. The 1plusexp crew has a lot of cool actual plays of more nsr stuff. Also the weekly scroll has a lot of cool actual plays of more recent nsr/osr stuff

I recently used it in a short campaign running the caverns of Thracia and it was very fun. I also used it for a couple of one shots. It flows so well and the karma mechanic is just enough to make it feel rewarding as a player
