So, is this actually legal? In Germany we treat perversion of justice (Rechtsbeugung) as a felony, resulting in 1 to 5 years of jail time (and of course disbarment).

I remember a story on the 5th circuit when they threw out some Merrill Lynch convictions in the scam Enron barge sales, around 2005. A story at the time had lawyers expressing “surprise” 5th circuit sided with defendants in the case, but it wasn’t really that surprising in a different rubric.

In MAGA world, if a judge presiding over one of Trump's criminal cases has a neighbor whose dog-walker's cousin gave 5 bucks to a Democratic candidate, that judge is conflicted. But a judge presiding over the trial of the man who gave her her job = no problem.
