If a platform got rid of engagement metrics (e.g.: likes, reposts, reply counts), what would it signal to you?
Do those metrics enhance your experience so much that you can't use a tool without it? Is it for someone else (to get sponsorship)?
Depends on user expectations, but even if not shown I think those metrics are important to craft an engaging feed.
A pure chronological algorithm with hidden likes, reposts, follows(?) would make people use social media less.
In which case, you may as well do one of those "offline social" apps
I try to think about what it is that keeps me scrolling or posting. And it's fucking engagement. I wrote on the Fediverse how much I dislike it and how hard it is to fight.
Like giving up alcohol and smoking was easier than this.
