Texting my girlfriend about what to bring to a cookout at a friend's house and autocorrect changing "pils" to "pills", trying to make it a very different kind of party.

Throwback to July 4, 2020, a year when we all got a little weird and I celebrated the holiday with a red (Campari), white (absinthe), and blue (blue Curaçao) pousse cafe. Thoroughly not recommended.

One of my favorite Portland inside jokes: excellent tropical drink haven Hale Pele took over their space from a previous tenant called Thatch Tiki Bar. Rather than take down the whole sign, they just removed the "ch".

I was dreading mine but left pleasantly surprised by what a minor deal it ended up being. Certainly not an ideal way to spend an afternoon, but apparently they've come a long way. Hopefully yours is as easy (assuming this means you're getting one).

Cocktail break: for a while I've been wanting to do a tropical take on the Rob Roy. Made it for the current Multnomah Whiskey Library menu. Toasted coconut-infused scotch, Yzaguirre blanco vermouth, Carpano Antica, Novo Fogo Colibri cachaça, Tempus Fugit creme de cacao, and coriander-lime bitters.

L: Pizza with stuff from the Portland farmers market. Romesco, shitakes, brie, cherry tomatoes, Padron peppers, micro basil. First pie of the night, got a little too much char on some of the edges but was delicious.
R: Cincinnati chili pizza continues to be the underdog crowd-pleaser.

Spent another evening trying out the new, very large Ooni and I've gotta say, this thing rules. I've made plenty of good pizza in my apartment but there's just something about slinging a very large pie into an 800-degree backyard oven that's hard to match.

Made my summer playlist of music I've been digging from the last year or so. New songs, covers, lots from bands I've been fortunate to see live recently. Enjoy! open.spotify.com/playlist/3wS...

Meanwhile in Portland last night (which allegedly would have burned down if not for Trump), we had hip marching bands and street magic.

Australia's nicotine policy shit show continues...
Government: Only pharmacies can sell vapes.
Pharmacies: We refuse to sell vapes.
Other people who supply vapes to adults: Subject to 7 years in prison.
Cigarettes: Sell them wherever.

I know it's been a rough period for SF but still had a fantastic day there:
-Breakfast at Saluhall, a new Nordic food hall
-Drinks and snacks at the incredible Lazy Bear
-Mates of State kicking off a new tour
-Brennivin Midori sour at Bar Iris
-Riding in a car that drives itself!

Jacob Grier, pulling zero punches in his latest piece about the very foreseeable consequences of the Australian government's punitive tax on cigarettes, and simultaneous defacto prohibition of much less harmful alternatives to smoking. Great article.

If they do this it should be like the graphic warning labels some countries do for cigarettes. Screenshots of posts from the extremely online, a photo of Jordan Peterson in a Two-Face suit. It could happen to you! The image for Bluesky would be Alf hog, obviously.

Regarding close-up magic, "the hand is faster than the eye" is mostly a myth. If anything, speed is often a tell. The work is in making movements natural and motivated, perhaps with a bit of misdirection, so that it feels like you couldn't have done anything.

Ooni ovens are fantastic. Important tip is to be ready to turn the pizza quickly. The dough edges closest to the flame will cook really quickly, so if you're not on top of it you'll get an excessively charred crust.
