Extraordinary. Have they not learned anything from the Windrush idiocy? Destroying data risks costs that are often immeasurably higher than the tiny expense incurred to preserve them.

I mean, James Cone was "the most dangerous theologian in America" because he talked about this stuff, so you're in very good company.

Not a criticism at all: it's just fun to note the odd little things that are bound to happen if you use libraries a lot.

A weird first for this heavy library user: I had a book checked out with a shortened due date because there were other holds. I dutifully returned it on time. I just got a notification that the library is sending me the book. I guess I had shortened my own due date!

i am spending more time in classes pleading with my students to *enjoy* college not as a temporary pit stop on the way to a life of drudgery but as an opportunity to grow intellectually in ways that will benefit them for life. enough with rank credentialism; it is as exhausting for us as the kids.

This is exactly what makes me so angry. If I'm going to give someone a failing grade, I have to put together an argument justifying it--precisely the activity the student has declined to undertake. I spend more time and cognitive capacity writing my comment than they spent writing the paper.

I had one of these this morning. It made me so angry. Like, I've taught this poem, including in this class, and I know these lines aren't in it. Just submit a 💩 that I can copy and paste into the grade spot. It'd save us both a lot of time.

@laradodds.bsky.social On the bright side, I have many students writing smart things about Cavendish, which also means that I keep seeing people citing your work.

This is well said. I’m also thinking about the Windrush scandal, where not so long ago a Home Secretary resigned because it turned out that destroying physical records can have real consequences for people (e.g., denial of citizenship rights). Maybe they should reconsider?

I'm not saying you should do it, but I have to admit that imagining the result is fun, even without pharmacological assistance.

I've just sent in written feedback on this proposal. I think it's a bad idea for all the usual reasons, but I also have on my desk Amelia Gentleman's "The Windrush Betrayal," documenting a momentous harm brought about by the British government's destruction of documents deemed no longer important.

I am grateful for the workers on campus who clear away the leaves. At the same time, the noise from the leaf-blowers is almost unbearable. No doubt it's worse for the workers. I hope they have adequate ear protection. I wish I'd realized I needed to bring my own!

Ha, this is relatable. I had grand ambitions of moving some Baxter projects forward this semester, but all the time has gotten swallowed up in teaching and other demands. I feel confident (haha) that my lighter teaching load next semester will make things easier.

Kind of amazed this hasn't become a bigger story yet. And it's not just the BL affected, but all the national legal deposit libraries too (like Oxford) who currently have no access to the millions of titles deposited electronically in the last 10 years. www.theregister.com/2023/11/20/r...

One thing that’s so alarming about the British Library’s situation is how clearly it shows that instability of digital archives does not only impact digital holdings but the physical holdings of an institution too. For non-archivists / non-librarians like me, we read about how the reproduction /1
