WTF. The electric company in Texas doesn't have a map of outages so people have been using the Whataburger App to figure out who lost power. This is like when Homer was using the Krusty Burger map when they got lost at sea.

Oh wow, Sam Riegel, super nice guy, star of Critical Role, VO actor (including several games I've worked on with him!) is a cancer survivor. Watch the video for the whole story.

Sending all the love his way.

If you're on the fence about ditching Adobe, Affinity is having a 50% off sale, and also offering a six month (!) trial.

Affinity takes some getting used to, but I've fully adjusted (that said, I'm not a graphics professional). It's also buy once, no subscription.

Oh put it on your list ASAP. It's a masterpiece, and downright shocking how relevant it still is. Not currently on Criterion, but it circulates in and out all the time. Looks like it's on Kanopy, if you have a library card.

Nah, don't worry, it's still great. The one thing the manga does that he couldn't do in the movie is worldbuilding. So. Much. Worldbuilding.

I love Nausicaa, but I thought Miyazaki never quite figured out manga storytelling. The art is gorgeous, but he tried to do too much in print. The slimmed down story in the film works better.

Clearly you bought an inkjet. Don't ever buy an inkjet! I gave up on those over a decade ago, switched to a Brother laser multifunction. Never had any issues.

Watched Out of Sight yesterday! Hadn't seen it since release. It's still pretty great. Sweet Smell of Success is one of my favorites. Delightfully bleak. Pair that one with Ace in the Hole for a solid double feature of sadness.

I 100% don't care about cars going in circles, but the dude who made Tron Legacy and Top Gun Maverick made this, and it's filmed for IMAX. I am IN.

Verdict on the Plum Ginger pie: The whole wheat crust isn't quite my thing, but the filling is fantastic. Overall, an excellent pie. 10,000/10. Would pie again.

Fair! But that's the state of the indie scene. Start at the grassroots level, then go for a deal with a book publisher, because bookstores are where comics are sold now in this country. Of course even then, that path only works for YA/middle grade.

As for other indies, the lack of money has led to a much more interesting scene at the grassroots level. The reason I love SPX is it's packed with creators I've never heard of, doing work that comes from art for art's sake.

This is only true if you consider comics to be Marvel/DC, which are laughably irrelevant. Kids and teens read tons of comics! Just not theirs. Neither publisher has a single book on the NYT best sellers list:

Eastman and Laird got their start by taking out an ad in CBG for their very not-serious attempt at a Daredevil parody starring some turtles. Worked out pretty well for them. These days that seems impossible. Rachel Smythe is doing great with her web to traditional pub path, but that's pretty rare.

Yes, I know there are alternatives now, and I wish them well. But the point is, there was a brief moment where things actually were coalescing into a decent path forward. That moment has passed, unfortunately.

I know it's a drop in the bucket these days, but really, I'm still absolutely amazed by how badly Amazon fucked up ComiXology. There was a brief window where you could open an app and just find comics to buy. And everything was there. Now it's a complete disaster.

Heyyy, neat. Be sure to hang out in Northhampton a bit, or at least walk down main street. You can still see the turtles on the windows of the former Words & Pictures Museum, although it was an AT&T store when I was last there.

This was the show, for anyone curious. Bowie's original band on the album, plus the National Symphony Orchestra performed all of Blackstar (and a handful of other classics) with vocals by Mitchell, Gail Ann Dorsey, and David Poe.

So very, very good.

Last night's David Bowie tribute at the Kennedy Center was a-mazing, but what was most stunning was this Thom Browne outfit John Cameron Mitchell wore. I would totally rock that look.

It truly sucks. I can reach creators who are still doing new work through their publishers, but some of these guys are retired. FB was the best way to reach them. I have a long list of people I want to talk to while there's still time. Gonna have to rely on personal connections in the future.

FB is a trash fire, but it's still how I get in touch with a lot of creators (especially older ones, which is pretty much my beat). Used to be that creators had personal web pages or blogs, but that's long gone. Then everyone went on FB. These things are leaving but nothing's replacing them.

Oh wow, a new Humble Bundle contains the entirety of Dave Sim's descent into madness/comic series Cerebus.

If you're conflicted about paying anything to Sim, it's just $18, and proceeds go to charity (you can determine how much).

Pixar's best movie. Also the last of the original ideas the founders came up with when they were brainstorming concepts at the very start of Pixar. It marked the end of an era.

It's definitely weird to see movies succumb to the same problem that doomed mainstream comics - continuity is fine in short bursts, but eventually it becomes an albatross, and you end up pandering to an increasingly tiny audience.

I'm old enough to remember when email was a big deal, because you could use it to contact someone dialed in from a different BBS or university.
