I went to office hours with my freshman physics professor and asked what he worked on and he said coherent matter, like a laser but with atoms instead of light. According to Wikipedia this was right around when he first succeeded. Nobel prize six years later:

This is the kind of question they ask in consulting interviews to see if you understand orders of magnitude, like “how many windows in LA” or “how many bananas are shipped to NYC every day.” Musk would flunk an interview to be a junior hire at BCG.

In grad school we did a group trip to an amusement park. A guy in our lab is 6’8”. You know how they have a measuring stick for kids to see if they’re tall enough for the roller coaster? Turns out there’s a big measuring stick for tall people too. He couldn’t ride.

I’m surprised they haven’t establish a global queuing policy for weekend crowds. Some stores it’s a free for all to push your way into a checkout line. Some run a single long line to the back of the store with a coordinator sending people to the next available spot (this is the way.)

It’s the current Prime Video model and the old cable channel + video store model. Half the time I want to watch a specific movie it’s not on any service I have and I need to rent it. Service-specific TV series and random movies are available if I’m not picky about what to watch. Pass the clicker!

Even with the match, tax savings, and ROI, he lost money versus not contributing at all. I also suspect there’s been monthly maintenance fees since he left the job. The lesson: flat fees overwhelm percentage gains that are supposedly incentives to invest when you have a small or part-time income.

A story of how the obvious financial decision is the wrong one: Teenage kid had a summer job which offered 401k and a match. Great, obviously sign up and start saving young! Now he’s in college so we’re trying to roll over to an IRA. But account custodian, ADP, charges $55 to close the account!

Oh thanks, I saw that and thought, Weren’t FCS, GoF, market vs lab localization, animal vector, etc debunked a year ago, maybe I missed some new finding and nope the NYT just made a nice graphical version completely ignoring the numerous holes that have been poked in these arguments.

I’ve had various e-bikes for ~10 years, a year into my newest commuter (a class 3- it cooks!) and the odometer is 2400 miles. I have the option to drive and park for free and just don’t, even in yesterday morning’s downpour it was preferable to driving- terrible traffic because everyone else drove.

Community path eh? They just finished the Brattle protected lanes to the Watertown line, which means with the exception of ~500 feet on Church St you have protected lane from MIT to Harvard to Brattle St to Watertown Greenway. Almost to Minuteman, have to get to Alewife from Fresh Pond on sidewalks.

A lot of kids use it to get from Harvard station to the high school, and it also pushed the tourists to surrounding sidewalks which aren’t designed for that level of traffic. Lots of people stepping out into bike lanes- not great! At least a lot of Harvard land is ungated (science center plaza)

My first night at MIT my bike was stolen. Admittedly I locked it stupidly (tire to frame over a pole instead of to the pole) I went to campus police to report it and they had a stack of pamphlets ready to go, essentially titled, “So your bike was stolen.”

I know it’s the reality of where we are, but it’s wild how accepted it is that Trump will pardon himself or order the federal cases dismissed if he wins. It was treated like a huge scandal when Clinton, who had no official power, met informally with the AG. But now it’s “duh that’s just politics.”

My favorite was if you walk into an open house without a buyer’s agent and just buy from the selling agent, it wasn’t, “Ok that’s only 3% commission, maybe buyer and seller can split that savings,” it was, “Cool seller’s agent is now also buyer’s agent and gets the whole 6%”
