It's really interesting to read this as a rur@l because, our library is partially town-funded, and partially funded by the elected board's fundraising activity. Can you go into some more details / throw me a link to learn more about how it usually works in bigger places?

Or else, the whole project is bunk and not worth considering on its own terms, and rights expansion is an insufficient paradigm for progress. But I tend to think that negative-freedoms/four-freedoms liberalism is fine and good? IDK

Backsliding from liberalism is, I think, qualitatively distinct from the market boom/bust, in that it causes a degree of moral injury that a simple market slump cannot. That backsliding in rights is caustic in a way that Lippmann's "Acids of Modernity" describes in terms of rights expansion itself.

The best Zakaria offers is e.g. Pres. Biden style economic populism + cosmopolitanism, which is great if you're *me*, but not apparently altogether that successful. Clearly we need a theory of rights/tech expansion that offers a smoother curve of progress. The current mode allows for too much pain.

It's not enough to say "liberalism has had a good 400 years but it has periodic backsliding as people get too spooked," because the democratic project of minority-protection requires that we *do something* about that reactionary instinct after technological destabilization.

Nascent thought about "Age of Revolutions" by Zakaria. The political economy Zakaria sketches is one of an overall growth in individual liberties and material wealth albeit with a sort of sinusoidal boom/bust cycle. That's fine but we need a "Keynesian"/anticyclical policy theory of rights expansion

A weird thing about the digital moment is that it is so flooded with legibility. I hate to get Foucauldian but, "borders should have 0 unauthorized crossings" is a sentiment that's only plausible if you believe that you are in a videogame. Like, the point of Church, according to Church, is not to bind society together in order to serve a moderately progressive Liberal project in the Dutch Republican model. The point of Church is Church stuff. Likewise other orgs have other purposes, many of which are outdated.

And you know what? I'm pretty sure that the T-ball crew are gonna be a better representative example of the community for organizing than "some rich olds." So the entire project of "go to church pwease so we can have a society" is flawed. Also is heresy / idolatry on its face, but whatever.

Local partisan politics, then, is obsessed with folks who are 'Young and Energetic.' And, then are shocked when I have a full-time job and a toddler. Local organizations could use policy fixes, but could also simply *not be the biggest fucking assholes in the world* on occasion.

Sometimes a Thinker will write about how much better it would be if we shored up our communitarian institutions (church, bowling, local parties, the Elks, Rotary &c) but, have you participated in any of those lately? They're kind of hostile and insular and suck shit a lot of the time.
