Ringo Starr is 84 today. I'm celebrating by listening to his 1970 disc Beaucoups of Blues. I think it's his best and that he could have had a lot of success on the country charts if he'd stuck with it. Peace and love.

In that phase of interview preparation in which I try to learn everything down to the subject's nostril circumference and shoe size so that I can pick up the phone and say, "Jim! How are you? What's it like in Montana this morning?" And then I forget everything I think I know and start to breathe.

Two years ago I was back in my hometown for my mom's funeral and my brother gave me a bunch of photos I hadn't seen in years, including this one. The night before I had broken my nose in a bicycle accident. My best friend and his sister dropped by to see me.

Tonight I watched Hannah Einbinder's HBO special and thought think she's doing some of the most innovative comedy since Steven Wright or Kids In The Hall. wonderful writing, deeply intelligent.
