My Senate race is actually pretty secure right now, but thanks for asking. I would be happy to have Harris. But she can’t be the candidate, unless Biden drops out.

It’s not about finding the perfect Democrat; you’re putting words into my mouth that I never said. It’s about giving voters more political choice, among other things. And about finding someone who can beat Trump, which Biden can’t do right now.

And all political parties should encourage people to challenge incumbents in a primary; it’s a healthier system. Don’t just coronate someone into a second term. I had way more choices for both Senator and House of Representatives in the primary, than I did for President.

No matter how you parse it, voters are not getting a choice in a primary, if the incumbent is the only choice.

It was a primary where the vast amount of Democrats chose not to run, in deference to Biden. I’m arguing that we shouldn’t do that anymore with incumbents. They need to earn their nominations through healthy competition. My ballot literally only had Biden on it as a choice.

And, tbh, I think we should have an open primary for every damn election, even if an incumbent is running. Voters deserve to have choices.

I will vote for whatever Democrat is the candidate, regardless. But I really want one who has a chance of beating Trump, and that’s pure practicality speaking.

It’s not that Biden is a bad person; he isn’t. And he’s been a decent, albeit not very exciting, president. But if the choice is sticking to a candidacy where he has no chance of winning or stepping aside to let someone truly have a chance, I want him to choose to save democracy.

I’m highly doubtful that a large percentage of Americans aren’t thinking it. I watched my grandparents decline as they aged; I would bet money that the same thing is slowly happening to Biden. (To Trump, also, but he’s not dropping out.)

I find it very hard to be a Jew sometimes, in this world. I want wars to stop and the Palestinians to have their own state, and people—everywhere—to be treated with respect and dignity. But all of that seems so idealistic sometimes. 😕

George Clooney is saying what most of us are thinking at this point. I like Joe Biden and the policy he’s enacted. But I don’t think he’s going to be able to complete another term or even win against Trump.

Anyway, this essay is worth a read. (Gift Link)

It’s 94 degrees out, but feels like 102 degrees. And our air conditioning is valiantly working away to try to cool the house. And yet, this small cat must nap all afternoon in her heated cat bed. 😅

100% this. No one gets to choose when they’re going to shuffle off this mortal coil, even as much as people try to delay it.

I should also add, for unknown reasons, that if the historical visa file that you’ve requested is for someone born in Italy or Germany, USCIS can only send you paper copies of the visa file. I honestly don’t know why Italy and Germany are singled out this way. 🤷‍♀️ 5/5

The snail mail letter also informed me that—in the year 2024!–, the file could not be emailed to me. Instead, they will be mailing me the electronic images of the file. On a CD. Which they needed to inform me about via snail mail. In 2024. Our government is absolutely not efficient in any way. 🙃

The email instructed me to wait before requesting the actual visa file. I waited. Today, I received an actual snail mail letter, giving me a tracking number for my great-aunt’s file, which could only be accessed by going to a website. (Why could this not be an email?) 2/

Storytime! In May 2023, I requested a copy of my great-aunt’s visa file, from when she immigrated to the US in 1924. The only place that has the historical visa files is the US Immigration Services genealogy program. On July 2, 2024, they sent me an email that they had located her visa file #.

Possibly demon? Our cat keeps sleeping on her heated cat bed, even on the days when it’s close to 100, and our air conditioning is struggling. She is very determined that she needs to use it.

Also, for safety reasons, schedule the cleaning for a day when you can be home with it.I always feel uncomfortable leaving the oven when it goes to such a high temperature. (Our oven auto locks for safety during self-clean, which I assume most ovens do?)

If your oven has a self-clean setting, it’s really easy to do. The oven will get very hot during cleaning, and sometimes you need to open a window because the kitchen smells like burning from the oven incinerating the gunk.

We are stuck in residential Connecticut, in a land of stone walls and extremely expensive houses, along with every other car that has been failed by Google Maps. We now live on this road, as we creep along inch by inch.

Also: Get off your arse and vote. My constituency was won for Labour by 15 votes. A high turnout from the French sorted this. You don't vote? Well, the fash do. If you're replying to this with why it's ideologically impure for a truly left wing person to vote, please just block yourself, I'm tired.

It’ll show up in his DNA, especially if it’s within 5-6 generations. It may be a small percentage now, but my 100% Ashkenazi parents have plenty of matches to Polish people with trees full of Catholic ancestors. Somewhere, someone was Jewish once, in all of those families.
