Pinus uncinata forests, a subalpine ecosystem in the Pyrenees, rarely burn. However, in May 2022, this forest was dry enough to burn ca. 200 ha after a lightning strike. In the burned area we saw Pyrenean chamois, bearded vultures. peregrine falcon ... Fanlo, Ordesa, ca. 1900 asl 🧪🌍🌿🌾🔥wildfire

Recently, I was invited to give a talk to Turkish forests. It has been a v. nice experience; they are very receptive to new postfire restoration approaches.

Fire facilitates herbaceous diversity in the Miombo of Africa. Fire also supports a unique diversity of orchids, gladioli, ferns + unique savanna life forms, underground trees. The Miombo spans an area the size of Western Europe. There was NO data on herbaceous communities in response to fire.

There is no spring this year in my area (Valencia region, E Spain) so I went to NE Spain to see a real spring. El Bierzo is full in red (Erica australis) with white brush strokes (cherry tree). 🌍🌿🌾📷

It is spring, so the landscape should be lush green with many flowers. However, this is not the case in Serra Gelada and its surroundings (Alacant, Valencia region, E Spain) - Silent Spring 2.0
